I have a love/hate relationship with March. On the one hand, it’s the start of spring, bringing longer days and the hint of warmer weather. On the other, days fluctuate from warm to cold without warning. It’s 60 degrees then the next day it’s snowing. This is frustrating even when you’re home, but when you’re traveling it’s near impossible. How do you pack for heat waves, cold nights, and sporadic rain showers?
I went to New York City in the beginning of the month, when the temperature was the most fickle. After checking the weather app about a million times and agonizing over what to bring, I finally came up with an early spring packing list that was luckily a success. Here’s my essential spring travel list for a long weekend in New York (or anywhere in the Midwest or Northeast with similar weather):
A trench coat or other spring jacket. These keep you dry, and go with both casual and nicer outfits during the day.
A leather jacket. Not always the warmest, but good for going out at night as you can wear it with jeans and heels or a cute dress. Plus, in NYC you never have to be outside too long at night as the public transport is so great, and there are ubers and taxis everywhere.
A pair of stylish but comfy jeans for exploring.
My go-to travel shirts and tanks. Basic is always easiest, as you can throw on a necklace or scarf to change it up from day to day. (I wear this bralette under them – so comfortable for exploring all day).
One nicer dress.
An oversized cardigan. For throwing over t-shirts and stuffing in your bag if the weather heats up.
Scarf. If you’ve been reading these packing lists for awhile you know by now I’m obsessed with scarves.
Boots. It might seem warm enough for flats, but if your feet get wet you will be miserable, and if your feet are cold your whole body is cold. These boots are great for day or night, leaving you so much extra room in your carry on!
A small umbrella. This one fits in your purse and doesn’t bend in the wind.
Spring travel beauty essentials:
Sunscreen. You should wear it all the time, but especially as the sun comes out more often and the weather gets warmer. I love this travel stick that doesn’t spill in your bag.
Body lotion. Winter is hard on your skin. Make sure you’re ready for fewer layers with this skin softening miracle. (Plus it smells really good and is super affordable!)
