Beaches, BBQs, and vacations. Summer is in full swing, and I’ve been enjoying it as much as possible with girls weekends, family camping trips in California, a few weeks in the Caribbean, cookouts in Wisconsin, and as much outdoor activity as possible in Chicago. Are you planning a summer trip this year? The Allianz Travel Insurance Vacation Confidence Index has tracked American summer vacation habits for the past seven years, and this year they found that Americans are planning to spend 11% more on a trip than last summer. Last year, more Americans planned to travel than this year, but they planned to spend less.
Where do you fall? I hope you get a chance to travel this summer, whether across the world or across your state. No matter where summer takes me, there are a few things I never travel without. Here’s everything you need for the ultimate summer vacation:
A summery destination. Road trips are basically synonymous with summer. So far this year I’ve taken two already, and am planning a five week trip starting in August. Beaches are another obvious choice, whether it’s Italy’s Amalfi Coast, California’s boardwalks, or the turquoise waters of the Caribbean. Or you could go the complete opposite direction and get out of the heat. Last year I went to Iceland in July and it was a welcome reprieve from the sweltering weather at home.
Sunscreen. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it many times again: sunscreen is a must! Skin cancer is no joke, and it’s so easily preventable. Here’s my list of favorite travel sunscreens, so you have no excuse not to pack a bottle or two. Now you can enjoy the sun guilt free.
Sunglasses. Just like you want to protect your skin, you’ll want to protect your eyes as well. Squinting while driving or lying on the beach is no fun. While you’re at it, throw in a hat for good measure.
A carry-on bag. Did you think I would have a summer necessity list without a piece of luggage? Of course not! This beach bag is one of my favorites, this rolling suitcase is perfect for city travel, and this backpack is what I take on more adventurous summer treks.
Travel insurance. I know, it costs money and you don’t think you’ll need it. But what if you do? I needed it last year in Iceland, and I can guarantee that won’t be the last time I’ll be thankful I’ve purchased it. If something comes up before or during your trip and you need to cancel flights or bookings, you’ll be glad you payed the extra few dollars. Paying a little now definitely beats paying hundreds later. I use Allianz Global Assistance for travel insurance, mainly because of their global reach. They have offices in 34 countries and dozens of locations around the United States. They insure 21 million customers each year, which assures me I’m in capable hands. For some things, like coffee and souvenirs, I seek out unknown, local shops when traveling. But when it comes to safety and money, I go with a well-known name I can trust.
