One thing I love most about Europe is that it’s such a versatile place to visit. Within cities, you have history, art, and culture at every turn. And in many countries, you can often travel from city to country to coastal life in just a matter of hours. Wherever I travel, I love checking out smaller boutique hotels and bed and breakfast style inns. They’re a great way to delve into the culture of the surrounding area without feeling like just another tourist. The personalized touches, attention to detail, and unique settings of these hotels make you feel at home in another country, allowing you to really experience the place. Here are some of my favorite boutique hotels around Europe so far.
Borgo dei Conti, Umbria, Italy
For a quiet country stay in Italy with all of the amenities you could dream of check out Borgo de Conti, which I first found through Chic Retreats. The Umbria region borders Tuscany and is located in an area often referred to as Italy’s “green heart.” The crisp, modern decor is complimented beautifully by the building’s rustic aesthetic, and is perfect for what the inn describes as a cozy and quiet stay. Bring your appetite, because the on-site restaurant serves incredible Umbrian cuisine.
Hotel de Nell, Paris, France
Paris is a magical city. It’s full of great art, delicious food, and a cultural experience on every corner. Your stay should reflect those qualities. With that in mind, I suggest spending your trip at the 33-room Hotel de Nell in France, suggested to me by the Scene’s well-traveled editors . If it had to be described in two words, they would have to be unassuming luxury. With an attentive staff, chic decor, modern amenities, and the city life just mere footsteps away, it’s everything you could want in a 5-star boutique hotel.
Casa Granados, Tossa de Mar, Spain
Just five minutes from the beach, this small, boutique hotel is housed in a 19th century building. The exposed stone walls and beams add to its rustic charm, while the modern conveniences like WiFi, flat screen TVs, minibars, and an espresso machine give you all the comforts of home. The romantic atmosphere and personalized service of the Casa Granados in Spain makes it the perfect place to celebrate a romantic weekend.
Oddfellows, Chester, United Kingdom
Described as an upscale wonderland, this boutique hotel is nothing short of charming. I first found it in the travel section of The Guardian, and couldn’t wait for my stay. With quirky features like an in-suite stand-alone garden tub directly next to the bed, interesting architecture, and eclectic decor, this is a destination you’ll definitely want on your list, especially if a hotel with personality is important to you. The courtyard is fantastic, as is its happening bar.
With so many boutique hotel options throughout Europe, you’ll feel like a local in no time. It looks like it might be time to start planning your next trip!
